Is Scotland a violent country? Is it safe to visit?

Question by Derekk: Is Scotland a violent country? Is it safe to visit?
I have been researching countries to visit, and I want to visit the Uk. I want to see Wales and England. But I am worried about visiting Scotland.

While I was researching, I noticed a lot of negative things.

According to the EU it has the second highest murder rate in Europe.

It also has Sectarian violence- where is is bad? Is it all over the country?

It has very high crime rate- alcohol and stabbings.

Also, there is violence against English people (7 year old beaten up for being English I read online). Are they the same towards Americans? Are we welcome?

I hear they are heavy drinkers and drug users too. Does this mean they are violent?

Should I avoid the cities and just go to the highlands?
Where are the scenic places to visit? And the friendliest people?
I want to learn some culture and history. Where are the best places?

My dad and I are going on another of our trips around Europe. We want to go somewhere new, where we haven’t been before. We like to see sites, such as castles and historic landmarks, and enjoy shopping. We need at least 3 countries, besides the following which I have already been to:
The UK (excluding Wales)
Scotland
Switzerland
Italy
Germany
France
Spain
He is my dad, so make it fun and exiting, and I need 3 countries to visit besides the ones I have listed. Thanks!

Answer by Andrew HI’m a Glaswegian who lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years and came back again because I didn’t like it. But to address each of your items:

Living costs: Edinburgh rent and housing costs are significantly higher than in Glasgow

Crime: Despite what some people say, the crime rate in both is low by international standards as long as you avoid certain rather unpleasant estates – this applies to both cities

Best for families: Dunno tbh! Edinburgh has won best of quality of life in UK type awards though

Question by Katyy :: A road trip to Scotland? What are the best atractions?Hotels?Restaurants?
Im taking a road trip to Scotland from South East London(Surrey) and I was wondering what are the top attractions on the way up there and also what is a nice place in Scotland to visit?

I have a week at hand, whilst in Scotland I’d like a mountain like area to stay in but on the way there I’m interested to see some cool landmarks, historical places but also something modern too.

Can anyone help?

Where are the best places to stay in Scotland?

Question by Tanya K: Where are the best places to stay in Scotland?
Boyfriend and I are taking a week off to go to Scotland but never been there. During the day we’ll go visiting etc so that’s not a problem but just wondering the best place to stay. Reasonably priced town, good restaurants, good pubs. Centre of most things. Not really keen on clubbing.

Would like to be able to go to a pub after dinner and have a drink without feeling threatened.

Any ideas?
